our first magazine appearance was to be for japan's biggest outdoor magazine, bepal. after a photo shoot and interview we finally managed tocrawl into be in the wee hours of the morning. it was worth it though.not only was it a great experience, but we were fortunate enough to be able to meet 2 amazing travellers in ishida san and yasuda san who had both circled the world on bicycle and motorbike respectively. to hear their stories was the highlight of our day. thanks guys. see you again on the road somewhere.

チャレンジ一番初めのサポーター
long before papers and tv came on board, there was japec. 5hey have been the longest supporters of the pongo hogo hogo challenge and last night after 4 long hard monthswe were finally able to meet up at their offices in osaka. when we last met we had talked about the day we would arrive, but never really thought it would come. yet here we are. thank you satomi and mr ono and the rest of the japec staff for a great night out in your town!

if you ever in biwako you have to stop by the farmer's market in ukawa. its a place where fruit still tastes like fruit and where bread still smells like real bread. be careful though. you may never go back to the rubbish they sell at your local supermarket. thank you komori san for giving us a loaf of your beautiful bread.

walking along lake biwako's back road we were stopped by a man with the biggest smile and friendliest manner. 'i just have to go see someone. can i come back and take a photo?' 5mins later Morino san was back with his camera and a t shirt from his own line. the most italian seeming japanese we've met.

滋賀県入りました！
敦賀から161号線を通って滋賀県入りしました。この道は今までで最も危ない道でした。サイクリストや徒歩で旅してる方達には絶対お勧めしません。通る車の8割が大型トラックで道狭いわカーブ多いわ、しかも流れ早くて何度も危ない目に合いました(T_T)この道を利用したドライバーの皆さん、ご迷惑おかけしました！
we are here in shiga after a torturous day. our advice to anyone thinking of coming to biwako on foot or bike or stilts through route 161 is DON'T DO IT YOU BLOODY FOOLS!!! Not if you love life anyway!

a bath from the history book. built 15years before the war, everything about this place was a reminder of times past, which included a seperate entrance from the road for men and women. it was a little something i found out after walking straight into the women's changing area. luckily it was empty. they must have all known how hot the water was in the bath.

just as the rain started we were called into this cafe and treated to coffee and sweets. apparently the paper and tv interviews that we had received two days ago had come out. we also met again 2 cyclists that had passed us earlier on their way from hokkaido to hiroshima. the road is full of travellers chasing different dreams. we wish them luck in theirs. thank you also to kissa ann for looking after us so well.

日本海最後の街(T_T)
a sad day in a way. for the last 3 1/2 months we have walked each day with the japan sea to our right. it's beauty has surprised us, fuelled many a dream, captivated us, but most of all helped us to get further than we or any other person thought was possible 3months ago. from tomorrow we head across japan to the pacific ocean side, but we'll do so with the fondest memories of this part of japan. thank you so much and see you again.

辻岡さん再び！
we met tsujioka san four days ago when she stopped us to donate some money for pongo. today she drove over 70kms to give us some lunch and some drinks. 'it was probably the last chance to meet you' she said as she waved us goodbye on our way to kyoto.

an appearance on tv brought the locals out in force. amongst them was this woman who said that her kids now believed they could do anything after seeing our challenge. hearing that has given us an extra spring to our step. thankyou for your donation as well.

越前クラゲ
a picture of the notorious echizen jellyfish that has plagued the japan sea at this time each year for the past decade.with its appearancｅ thought to be connected with rising sea temperatures, the echizen jellyfish is enormous growing to over a metre in diameter. there will be a bigger find before we are done.

winter is almost here and a leaky moist
tent would just add to the challenge. it is after all 12years old now. so one of our new jobs is to waterproof it again. a heavy load to carry but worth it if it keeps tonight's rain out. wish us luck.

our 20km walk to komatsu has been made much easier by the kindness shown to us by suzu san, and by a complete strnger who gave us 10 dollars in a bread shop. a little here and there adds up in the end. thank you.

三人で竹馬！
there has only ever been one other person to have walked this far on stilts.Iizuka san completed a 2000km circuit of the oku no housou michi in april this year. Today we were lucky enough to walk with him. Thank you for the great memory and for bringing us some worn car tire rubber, the significance of which the three of us will only ever really understand.

he popped up in aomori. then he popped up 300kms away in akita just to say hello. yesterday we got a call as we came into kanazawa almost 1000kms away from his home.'let's have dinner tonight. my shout.' offered his familiar voice down the phone. that is our friend otaku san.
